BB’s Butterflies
Complied and edited by Bryan Holden

Layout 1BB’s fascination for the ‘elusive’ Purple Emperor butterfly (Apatura iris) took hold when he was very young. He finally came ‘face to antennae with iris’ properly for the first time in 1946, after which he enjoyed many happy sightings before spraying to eliminate Oak Tortrix moths led to its extinction in the 1960s.

The iris bug then bit BB even deeper. He learnt how to gather eggs successfully and so began his mission to hand rear ‘His Imperial Majesty’ in muslin-protected cages in his own garden, releasing the mature adults back into the wild in Fermyn Wood.

BB’s Butterflies is a treasure trove of extracts from BB’s many books and magazine articles featuring the Purple Emperor and other butterflies.

Readers will delight in BB’s descriptive prose which reveals what a marvellous observer and entomologist he was, interspersed throughout with BB’s own distinctive colour illustrations, monotone scraper boards and colour photographs.

Immerse yourself in the world of the Purple Emperor and Nature in general and enjoy this taster of BB’s enormous literary output, along with first-hand contributions from many who knew and supported him in his conservation work; including Douglas Goddard, Butterfly Recorder for Northamptonshire, Badger Walker and Bill Humphreys, lifelong friends of BB and John McEwen, author and journalist.

BB changed my life, for his book Brendon Chase helped set my path of direction. Sure enough, unravelling the mysteries of the Purple Emperor became my life’s work.” Matthew Oates, the National Trust’s specialist on butterflies, Foreword.

Tales of a Foraging Bird
by James Holden

This enlightening 128 page paperback features a collection of diary excerpts, blogs, poems and personal reflections which tell of the author’s word-wide journeyings and search for meaning in the world around him.

His travels have taken him to some of the world’s great spiritual and natural realms – including Mt Sinai and Galapagos as well as The Gambia, Costa Rica, Mexico, New York, Atlanta and Australia’s outback – and as his writings show it is often through animal and bird encounters that he finds a sense of peace and understanding.

At the request of the author all sales will be allocated to a special fund held by the African Oyster Trust (registered charity number: 1118298) so that they can fund a clinic in the town of Kartong in The Gambia. It is hoped that this will not only help the people of Kartong, but also play an important role in helping to save the wonderful watery paradise (an annual stop-over for thousands of migratory birds) that surrounds the Kartong Bird Observatory mentioned in the book.

Faxton – The Lost Village
by Bryan Holden

For almost one thousand years the Northamptonshire village of Faxton was a thriving rural community.

At its zenith it supported a population of around 100 souls.

Bryan Holden tells the story of the village and the lives of its inhabitants in a well-researched and, at times, emotive manner, supported by an abundance of vintage photographs and comments and insights from some of the former villagers.

The story of Faxton is set against a colourful historical tapestry.

  • The Black Death that almost wiped out the entire village
  • Royalist troops over-nighting before the ill-starred battle of Naseby
  • The murder of Judge Nicholls, assizes judge and Lord of the Manor of Faxton
  • Tales of ghostly encounters; Cows that rang the church bells; the antics of the eccentric parson, father of Denys Watkins-Pitchford (aka ‘BB’) the celebrated author and illustrator

Today, a single standing stone, with a brief inscription, marks the spot where once stood the quaint old church of St Denys. Fields of corn sprout between myriad shards of brick and tile that litter the grounds – the flotsam and jetsam of a lost world.

Faxton – The Lost Village is limited to just 950 clothbound copies. All copies numbered and signed by the author.
